Royal Theatre of Rabat — Grand Theatre of Rabat

Setting and cultural purpose The Royal Theatre of Rabat, also widely known as the Grand Theatre of Rabat, is a performing arts venue on the Bouregreg waterfront in Rabat. Its location forms part of the river valley's changing urban landscape between Rabat and Salé. The theatre is designed to host drama, dance, orchestral and popular music, opera, professional encounters and outdoor performances. Its official website maintains a programme of current and forthcoming events.

Architecture by Zaha Hadid The building was designed by Iraqi-British architect Zaha Hadid, recipient of the 2004 Pritzker Architecture Prize. Its flowing silhouette and connected interior spaces refer to the movement of the nearby Bouregreg River. Sculptural volumes, natural light, circulation spaces, stage engineering and specialised acoustics shape the experience of the building. The institution reports that more than 900 workers and craftspeople contributed to construction, with approximately 90 percent of the work undertaken by Moroccan companies. The project belongs to Hadid's architectural legacy in Africa.

Performance halls and facilities The main auditorium seats 1,821 people. Its acoustic design targets an exceptionally low background noise rating of NR10 and supports theatre, opera, dance, symphonic concerts and amplified performances. The flexible Small Theatre has 250 seats and is intended for smaller productions, experimental formats, discussions and educational workshops. An outdoor amphitheatre can host up to 7,000 spectators. Other facilities include the foyer, media room, a sculptural circulation space known as the Canyon, a shop and a restaurant with panoramic terraces. Seating plans and access arrangements depend on the event.

Opening and programme According to the theatre's official account, its inauguration ceremony was presided over by Princess Lalla Hasnaa, accompanied by Brigitte Macron. The venue's programme combines Moroccan and international artists and a range of performing arts disciplines.

Recorded events in 2026 Cultural listings associated with the venue include Ibrahim Maalouf's Trumpets of Michel-Ange (22 September), Dance Theatre of Harlem (2 October) and Kadim Al Sahir on the outdoor esplanade (9 October). Forthcoming listings include Maestro Oleg Reshetkin and the Royal Symphony Orchestra (19 October), This Is Michael (29–30 October), Mo Amer Live in Rabat (31 October), Guy Manoukian (5 November) and Nassif Zeytoun (19 December).
